If your home was built between 1965 and 1976 — the bulk of the post-war neighbourhoods in Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, and Markham — there's a strong chance the branch wiring inside your walls is aluminum. Aluminum oxidizes where it terminates at outlets, switches, and the panel. The oxidation creates resistance, the resistance creates heat, and over decades the connection can fail in a way that starts a fire. Insurance companies have been flagging aluminum wiring in Ontario for years, and remediation is now the standard solution. Tim's done dozens of these. Most homeowners go the pigtailing route because it gets the insurance company off your back at a fraction of the cost of a full rewire.
What it costs
Transparent pricing in writing.
Pigtailing a typical 3-bedroom home with AlumiConn connectors at every outlet, switch, and panel termination runs $3,000 to $8,000 depending on size and accessibility. Full replacement to copper runs $15,000 to $30,000 and usually only makes sense during a major renovation. Tim quotes both options after the walkthrough so you can decide.
Before & after
What we replace. What we leave.
What we typically find
- Insurance company flagged aluminum wiring on inspection
- Outlets warm to the touch, especially the ones with bigger loads
- Flickering lights on certain circuits when appliances cycle
- Burning smell behind a switch or outlet cover
- Buying or selling — the inspection report called it out

Two Real Options
Pigtailing vs. full replacement.
- 01
Walkthrough and confirm
Tim opens a sample of outlet and switch boxes to confirm aluminum branch wiring is actually present (sometimes it's only on certain circuits or only the original panel feeders).
- 02
Quote both paths
We give you a price for pigtailing every connection with AlumiConn connectors, and a price for a full copper rewire. You pick which makes sense.
- 03
The work
Pigtailing: 1-2 days for a typical home, every outlet, switch, and panel termination gets a CO/ALR or AlumiConn copper splice. Full rewire: 1-2 weeks, every aluminum run pulled and replaced with NMD-90 copper.
- 04
ESA inspection and paperwork
Pulled permits, inspected work, and the documentation your insurance company needs to close the file.

Aluminum-to-copper connections have to be made with the right rated hardware. CO/ALR-rated devices or AlumiConn connectors are the only methods Ontario insurance carriers accept. Wire nuts alone — even purple Marrettes — are not enough. Tim uses AlumiConns at every connection, pulls the ESA permit on every job, and gets the inspection paperwork your insurance company needs.

FAQ
Common questions
Is aluminum wiring actually dangerous?
It can be — at the connection points. Aluminum oxidizes where it terminates at outlets, switches, and the panel. The oxidation creates resistance, the resistance creates heat, and over decades the connection can fail badly enough to start a fire. The wire itself, inside the walls, is fine. The remediation is at every connection point.
What's the difference between pigtailing and a full rewire?
Pigtailing means we splice a short piece of copper to each aluminum wire using an AlumiConn connector, then attach the copper to the outlet or switch. Full rewire means we replace every run of aluminum back to the panel with copper NMD-90. Pigtailing is what most homeowners do — it's what insurance accepts and it costs a fraction of a rewire.
Will my insurance accept pigtailing?
Yes — pigtailing with AlumiConn connectors (or CO/ALR-rated devices) is the industry-standard remediation that Ontario insurance carriers accept. We provide the ESA inspection paperwork they need.
How long does pigtailing take?
A typical 3-bedroom home takes 1-2 days. We work room by room, replacing every outlet and switch device with the pigtail, and updating the panel terminations. Power is off only at the circuit we're working on at any given moment.
