Battery backup is what generator owners ask about when they're ready to skip the natural gas and the maintenance. A Tesla Powerwall or Enphase IQ battery sits silently on the wall, charges from solar or off-peak grid power, and automatically powers the house during an outage — no transfer switch hum, no engine, no gas line. Tim has installed Powerwalls and Enphase systems across York Region, sometimes paired with new solar, sometimes battery-only on existing solar, sometimes battery-only with no solar at all.

A typical 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 or Enphase IQ 5P install runs $15,000 to $25,000 including the gateway, ESA permit, and commissioning. Larger 20-30 kWh multi-battery systems run $25,000 to $35,000. Solar integration is priced separately if you're also adding panels.

How We Install
Spec, permit, install, commission.
Tim walks the home with you to figure out what you want backed up (whole home vs. critical-loads panel), where the battery will live (garage, basement, exterior wall), and whether you're pairing with new or existing solar. We pull the ESA permit, install the Tesla Gateway or Enphase Combiner, run dedicated feeders to the battery location, mount and commission the battery, configure backup behavior in the app, and run a live transfer test. ESA inspection signs off the system.
Battery installs are high-voltage DC and AC integrated with your panel, your solar (if any), and the utility grid. Wrong gateway config or misconfigured backup behavior and the system either fails to back up the house or backfeeds the grid (illegal and dangerous). Tim pulls the ESA permit, installs the manufacturer-approved gateway, and commissions the system to manufacturer spec.

How much does battery backup cost?
A single Powerwall or Enphase IQ 5P installed runs $15,000 to $25,000 depending on system size and complexity. Larger multi-battery installs run higher. Battery prices are dropping every year — quote at install time, not from last year's number.
How long does the battery last in an outage?
Depends on what you're running. A 13.5 kWh Powerwall typically backs up a whole home for 10-24 hours, or critical loads (fridge, freezer, sump, wifi, some lights) for 2-4 days. Pair with solar and the battery recharges during daylight, so the system can run indefinitely.
Do I need solar to install a battery?
No. Battery-only installs are common — you charge the battery off-peak grid power and discharge on-peak for savings, plus you have automatic backup. Solar adds resilience and recharge but isn't required.
