After the last big ice storm took out power across York Region for three or four days, generator inquiries doubled. Tim's installed dozens of Generac and Kohler whole-home standby units across Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, and the rural properties out toward Holland Landing. The install isn't complicated if you know what you're doing: pour or set a pad, run the natural gas line, install the automatic transfer switch (ATS) at the panel, wire to the generator, commission, and test.
What it costs
Transparent pricing in writing.
Mid-size home installs run $10,000 to $14,000 with the generator equipment included. Larger homes run $14,000 to $20,000, also with the equipment. A portable-generator inlet box (labour only — you supply the portable generator) is a cheaper alternative.
Before & after
What we replace. What we leave.
What we typically find
- Long outages from ice storms or summer thunderstorms
- Sump pump must run continuously — basement flooding risk on outages
- Work from home, can't lose internet and power for days
- Medical equipment needs continuous power
- Rural property with frequent or extended outages

How We Install
From quote to first auto-start.
Tim walks the property with you to pick the generator location — close enough to the gas meter and the panel to keep runs short, far enough from the house and bedrooms for noise code. We size the unit to what you actually want to power (whole home vs. selected circuits — different ATS configurations). We coordinate the gas line with a licensed gas fitter, pour or set the pad, mount the ATS at the panel, run the wiring under ESA permit, commission the unit, and run a live transfer test so you see it work.

Standby generators tie into your gas line, your panel, and an ATS that flips your house off utility power and onto the generator in under 10 seconds. Mis-wire the ATS or backfeed the utility line and someone dies or the house burns. Tim pulls the ESA permit on every install, coordinates the licensed gas fitter, and commissions the unit live so you see it work before he leaves.

FAQ
Common questions
How much does a whole-home generator cost?
Mid-size home installs run $10,000 to $14,000 with generator equipment included. Larger homes run $14,000 to $20,000, also with the equipment. Cost depends on generator size, distance from the gas meter and panel, and pad requirements.
How long until the generator kicks in during an outage?
Most units start and transfer load in 8-15 seconds. You'll notice the lights flicker once and then everything's back on — including the furnace, fridge, sump, and Wi-Fi.
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas if you have a gas line at the house — no fuel to manage, runs indefinitely. Propane for rural properties without natural gas — needs a tank. Tim sizes and quotes either way.
Do you handle the gas line connection?
We coordinate with a licensed gas fitter (we don't do gas ourselves — that's a separate trade in Ontario). The gas line cost is included in the quote.
