Greener Homes Grant, the federal rebate program, and now the Canada Greener Homes Loan have made air-source heat pumps the fastest-growing electrical project in York Region. Tim has done the electrical side on dozens of Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Trane heat pump installs — usually working alongside the HVAC contractor doing the mechanical. The electrical work itself is straightforward: dedicated 240V circuit, weatherproof disconnect at the outdoor unit, sometimes a subpanel run if the install location is far from the main panel.

What it costs

Transparent pricing in writing.

Electrical work for a standard heat pump install runs $1,200 to $3,000 including the dedicated circuit, disconnect, and ESA permit. If the panel needs an upgrade to make room for the heat pump load, that's a separate $3,000-$5,000 (and qualifies for the same rebates). Tim quotes the full picture upfront.

Before & after

What we replace. What we leave.

What we typically find

  • New heat pump install — HVAC contractor needs electrical ready
  • Replacing furnace + AC with a heat pump — full electrical retrofit
  • Existing heat pump wiring is wrong amperage or ungrounded
  • Panel doesn't have spare capacity — needs upgrade alongside heat pump
  • Cold-climate heat pump install — higher amperage for low-temp performance

How We Install

Coordinate with HVAC, wire it right.

Tim coordinates with your HVAC contractor on the location of the outdoor unit, runs a load calculation on your panel, and confirms the panel has the spare capacity (or quotes the upgrade alongside). We pull the ESA permit, run the dedicated 240V circuit to the outdoor unit, install a weatherproof disconnect within sight of the unit, and handle the indoor unit's power requirements (most are 120V for the air handler controls). The HVAC contractor handles the refrigerant lines and the actual unit hookup. ESA inspection signs off the electrical work.

Heat pumps draw real current — 30 to 50 amps continuous for cold-climate models. Undersized wire or the wrong breaker and the unit nuisance-trips on cold-snap days when you need it most. Tim sizes the circuit to the unit's manufacturer spec, uses the right breaker, and coordinates the ESA inspection with the HVAC contractor's mechanical inspection.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does heat pump wiring cost?

Standard electrical work runs $1,200 to $3,000. Cost varies with distance from the panel, whether outdoor conduit is needed, and panel capacity.

Will my panel handle a heat pump?

Depends on your existing load. Tim runs a load calculation on the panel before quoting. Most 200A services handle a heat pump fine. Older 100A services often need an upgrade.

Does the heat pump rebate cover the electrical work?

In most cases yes — the Canada Greener Homes Grant and the Greener Homes Loan can cover both the heat pump itself and the supporting electrical work including a panel upgrade. Tim provides the documentation you need for the rebate application.
