Smoke and CO alarms save lives — but only the right ones, installed right, and replaced before they expire. Ontario code requires hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms on every level and outside every bedroom. CO alarms are required if you have a gas furnace, gas range, gas water heater, fireplace, or attached garage (which is almost every home in York Region). Tim retrofits and replaces them all the time, and finds expired units in almost every home — most people don't know smoke alarms have a 10-year shelf life.
What it costs
Transparent pricing in writing.
A full code-compliant retrofit for a typical 3-bedroom home (4-6 alarms hardwired and interconnected) runs $400 to $1,200. Simple unit-by-unit replacement is $80 to $150 per location. Tim quotes after walking the home.
Before & after
What we replace. What we leave.
What we typically find
- Alarm chirping — beyond a battery (usually means it's expired)
- Buying or selling — home inspection flagged the alarms
- Want hardwired interconnected alarms instead of battery-only
- Renovation triggered code requirements for new/upgraded alarms
- Adding a basement bedroom or apartment — needs proper alarm coverage

How We Retrofit
Code-compliant in one visit.
Tim walks the house and checks every existing alarm — type, age, location, whether it's hardwired and interconnected as code requires. We replace expired units, add alarms where code requires them and they're missing, and convert battery-only setups to hardwired interconnected systems. Most homes take 2-4 hours total. We label every alarm with the install date and replacement year so you know when to swap them next.

Hardwired interconnected smoke alarms are the code requirement — battery-only doesn't cut it in Ontario new construction or renovation. Wrong wiring or interconnection and they don't trigger together when one detects smoke. Tim wires every alarm to a dedicated circuit (or the lighting circuit per code) and tests the interconnect: when one alarm trips, every alarm in the house goes off.

FAQ
Common questions
How often do smoke alarms need to be replaced?
Every 10 years from the manufacture date stamped on the back. CO alarms typically every 7-10 years. If your alarms are chirping and the batteries are fresh, they're likely expired.
Does Ontario require hardwired alarms?
Yes — for new construction and major renovations. Existing homes can grandfather battery-only setups, but hardwired interconnected is the current standard and what insurance companies want to see.
Where do alarms need to go?
Smoke alarms on every level and outside every sleeping area. CO alarms outside every sleeping area in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garage. Tim maps it out during the walkthrough.
