A whole-home surge protective device (SPD) installed at the panel sees the spike before it gets into your home wiring and clamps it harmless. Tim installs Eaton, Siemens, and Schneider SPDs. It's the cheapest insurance against expensive damage there is — usually under a thousand bucks to protect everything that plugs in.

The Install
One device. Every outlet protected.
Tim walks the panel and confirms the install location (most SPDs mount inside or beside the panel). We pull the ESA permit, kill power to the panel for the install, mount the SPD, connect to a dedicated 2-pole breaker, and commission the indicator lights. Most installs take under 90 minutes. After that, every circuit in the house is protected against utility-side spikes.
An SPD installed wrong is worse than no SPD at all — wrong breaker, wrong wire gauge, or wrong panel location and the device either fails to clamp the surge or fails open and lets it through. Tim installs to manufacturer spec, on the correct dedicated breaker, with the right wire gauge for the SPD's clamping current rating. ESA permit pulled on every install.

Common questions
Isn't a surge strip the same thing?
No. A power strip surge protector only protects the devices plugged into it — and only for small transients. A whole-home SPD at the panel protects every circuit, every outlet, every hardwired appliance from spikes large enough to fry an entire house's electronics in one event.
How long does the SPD last?
Modern SPDs have indicator lights showing whether they're still functional. Most last 5-15 years depending on how many surge events they absorb. After a major lightning strike, you should have it inspected and likely replaced.
Will my insurance discount apply if I install one?
Some carriers offer a small discount for whole-home surge protection. More importantly, surge damage is often denied or limited in homeowner policies — the SPD is the cheap insurance the insurance doesn't cover.
